Free your e-reader!
Date: 15 June 2025
Time: 16:00 - 18:00
Location: Varia (Gouwstraat 3)
A calm, friendly workshop about jailbreaking your e-reader, a way to remove restrictions and take back some control over a device you already own.
These days, e-readers (especially Kindles) come with more limitations than ever: built-in ads, locked-in formats, and the looming possibility of companies like Amazon removing books from your library. Jailbreaking lets you open up your device and use it more freely.
In this workshop, we’ll walk through the process of jailbreaking step by step. You’ll learn how to install KOReader, a free, open-source reading app that supports more file types, lets you customize fonts and layout, and gives you better control over your reading experience. Jailbreaking is fully legal and, in most cases, reversible. You’ll still be able to use your device exactly as you did before, just with more options.
We’ll talk about:
What jailbreaking is, and why you might want to do it now
How to install KOReader
How to find help and community beyond the workshop
Why it matters to keep access to the tools and texts we rely on
No technical background is needed, just bring your own e-reader (we won’t have extras), and we’ll try it together. It’s a delicate art, and sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that’s okay, this is more about learning and trying than getting it “right” the first time.
There will be snacks, chats, and space to ask questions.
Held in English.
It will be hosted by Ada, a creative coder, ebook reader, and Kindle hater with help from her assistant and collaborator Stephen Kerr, an overall very nice friend.
