If in the light of recent events, you've been curious to look into alternative social media that doesn't run on an ad-based model, or is a big-tech owned walled garden, or if you are curious to meet other people who have accounts on the fediverse and beyond, please feel welcome to join us on the 7th of February where we'll explore some alternatives to dominant social media and get started sharing in a more convivial manner.
This will be an in person event for making accounts on the fediverse and exploring alternative platforms for being social together, whilst also getting to meet people who are already there doing the same thing!
The fediverse is an ecosystem of decentralised and interconnected social media platforms. Growing communities on the fediverse are able to communicate with each other without being locked in by a single vendor, which allows them to decide on their own governance model, and edit the tools according to their needs. Some examples of software on the fediverse include Mastodon (microblogging), Pixelfed (image sharing), Peertube (video sharing), Funkwhale (audio sharing), Bookwyrm (book reviews), among others.
If you can't make it, but are still curious, we recommend checking out the Fedi Garden website: https://fedi.garden/
