  • Whine, Dine and Decline

In the last three decades, the average temperature in the Netherlands has gone up 1.1°C. Following the current high-emissions trajectory, 60 years from now, it is predicted that the local climate will resemble the one of present-day South-West of France, or the Mediterranean climate of Italy*. Food production will, without doubt, bear the brunt of these massive changes. What will it mean for the local foodscape of the Netherlands? Considering that the number of commercial wineries has increased more than 20 times in the last 30 years, will The Netherlands become Europe's new wine country?

Gathering under this context, we will collectively imagine a future Dutch cuisine transformed by climate change, migration, political and economic climate. What options do we have to get involved in the processes through which food is produced, distributed and consumed? Based on data, case studies and our hopes, desires and fears, we will join in conversation around a dinner table. We will be joined by agroecologist and PhD researcher Daniela García-Caro, who will share her knowledge and experience on food systems. Instead of complaining about Dutch food, let's imagine its future!

If you'd like to join in the conversation, please send an email to info@varia.zone with the mention 'Whine and dine' in the subject, and let us know about any dietary restrictions. This event will have limited attendance!

This event falls under the Homebrewing Seed research thread. Through this research we aim to co-create understandings through collaboratively experimenting with others, and de-mystify current technological practices in order to share and question them more easily.

Daniela García-Caro is an agroecologist and PhD researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam that loves food (and wine). Within her work, and in much of her free time, she broadly focuses on the sustainability (or lack thereof) of food systems. Her research interests center the sustainable transformations of food systems towards agroecological realities, attempting to bridge the gaps between food system research, practice, law and policy.
